As early as the 6th c there was prob-ably a church situated here. The tower dates back to the Romanesque and Gothic era. The Baroque building was constructed between 1706 and 1711.
It escaped the Great Fire of 1811. Prominent features of the Church’s interior are the altars, the pilasters, and the pulpit made of the so-called “Sargans Marble”, a black-and white limestone processed and smoothed to a marble-like appearance. The Sargans Marble was extracted from the Vild quarry. The tabernacle with its marble from the Southern Alps is worthy of notice. The church door opens onto the former market square with its market cross.
