The Old Schoolhouse on the Path to the Castle

As early as the 14th century Sargans had a town school. However, the
medieval schoolhouse burnt down in the three fires of the 15th century. The
schoolhouse was mentioned in the record of expenditure of 1555 and the
building was used as a school until 1826. It was rebuilt after the Great Fire
of 1811 but the amenities and the space available were unsuitable. The
teacher lived on the first floor, and the classroom on the second floor was difficult to heat. In winter more than 100 children attended school. In 1825–26 a new town hall and schoolhouse was built on Upper Lane and the old schoolhouse was sold to a private owner.
