The Hospital in the Town

Sick people in the town were looked after in the hospital as early as the
16th c. As well as medical care, it provided accommodation for poor travellers,
and served as an almshouse. The hospital was mentioned in the record of expenditure of 1555, and in the bishop’s inspection report of 1639 it was described as small and unsuitable. As late as the 17th century the plague struck the District of Sargans. In 1629 it caused the death of half of its population. As it was believed it might banish the plague if the hospital were relocated outside the town walls, it was moved to the eastern access road. The old hospital was then used as a private residential house.
