Sargans is located on the southern and sunny slopes of Mount Gonzen. As a
result water has been a precious commodity since the Middle Ages. The Old Town still has three wells with running water: one outside the Lower Gate, one in the Lower Lane, and one at the Town Hall. Until the 20th c water from these wells was used in houses and kitchens, as well as for animals and gardens. The Town Hall’s well was located on the road until the Great Fire of 1811 when it was moved to the current location (where the Guesthouse “The Black Lion” was situated until 1811). There were also pump wells, one of which was located in the north western corner of the Old Town.
