The Wayside Chapel of St Magnus

St Magnus is the patron Saint of the cattle and he is invoked for help
against vermin in gardens and fields. The mainly agricultural population
built a wayside chapel on the western access road in the honour of St Magnus. Presumably the chapel was donated by the Pfäfers abbot Michael Saxer at the beginning of the 17th c. The copy of the painting shows St Magnus conquering the dragon.
There has been a St Magnus brotherhood in Sargans since the 15th c. It was founded as a welfare institution for the miners of the Mount Gonzen iron mine.
