Residential houses and stables were located in this area before the Great Fire of 1811. After 1812 building material for reconstruction was extracted from here. The moraine sand the Old Town is built on gave “Sandgrube”
(sandpit) its name. The new primary school, which was designed by Adolf Gaudy, was built in the former vineyard between 1906 and 1908. It included classrooms, a gymnasium, and an apartment. Extensive renovations were carried out in 1983. The sandpit was later used as a playground and serves as a car park today. In 2000 the new parish centre of the Catholic Church was built in the grounds of the town gardens.
