The Chapel of St Mary in Vild

In 1448 a wayside shrine was mentioned on the mule-track leading over Matug (a small pass) to the Rhine Valley. In 1602 Christoffel Geel and his wife Anna Bantlin laid the foundation stone for the Chapel in Vild. Bishop Johannes V. Flugi from Chur consecrated the chapel of St Mary in 1606. The expansions in 1628 and in 1692 brought the chapel to its present form. In the oldest part precious paintings have been preserved; the high altar dates back to 1685. In the tower there are still two bells dating back to the time of the foundation. Since its renovation between 1975 and 1981 the chapel can again be admired in its original 17th c appearance.
