The Castle’s Tithe House

The castle’s tithe house was built in the Middle Ages at the foot of the
stairs that link the Old Town and the castle. From the 15th century cheese
and butter tithes paid by the subjects were stored in the tithe house’s cellar.
At that time taxes were still paid in kind. After the feudal system of the Old Swiss Confederacy ended in 1798, the house belonged to the Canton of
St.Gallen. The Canton donated the site for reconstruction after the Great
Fire of 1811, and a semi-detached house was built on the old foundation
walls. The dairy cellar still exists, and is now privately owned.
