The Hamlet of Vild

The hamlet of Vild was of economic importance because of its toll station, its horse station (for carriages requiring fresh horses), and its salt trader. In 1492 the Swiss Confederacy built the Schollberg Road and thus the District of Sargans was linked directly with Werdenberg. The Hohwand Road in the plain was built by the Canton of St Gallen in 1822. In 1848, when the Swiss Federal State was founded, the inland tolls were abolished and the toll station was therefore no longer in use. In the quarry located in Vild the limestone was excavated and processed to become the so-called “Sargans Marble”. In 1892 the closely-built core of the hamlet was destroyed by a fire.
