The house was built in 1506 and its core is one of the oldest buildings in Sargans. It is closely linked with the sulphur spring spa, which gave the area its name “Schwefelbad”. As early as the Middle Ages the sulphur water was used for both therapeutic and recreational purposes. After 1750 the building belonged to the Provincial Clerk Walter Tschudi who had his office here. Earlier the Provincial Office had been located in the castle for over 300 years. After the feudalistic system of the Old Swiss Confederacy came to an end, the Sulphur Spa House was privately owned. Since 1928 it has been used for commercial and residential purposes by the Anrig family.
