St Matthew’s Foundation

As early as 1394 the Curates’ Houses St Mary and St Matthew were built as
a clerical foundation of the counts of Sargans. The St Matthew’s Foundation
was at that time located where the cemetery is today. After the fire in 1625 it was rebuilt at the same location and then destroyed again in the Great Fire of 1811. Today’s building on the enlarged Church Square dates back to 1812. It was used as the second Curate’s home until the middle of the last century. The building was renovated in 1865 (date above entrance), and again in 1981 (building of arcades). Since 1981 the Communal Office and an exhibition room have been located in this building.
